Magnet-Man
The Power of Magnet-Man
The Magnet-Man program helps learners develop independent reading,
writing and spelling skills.
Philosophy
Every school child is capable of:
learning all the English letter names and sounds and some basic/pass
words in their first year of school.
distinguishing between letter sounds and names,
making sense of word based texts.
Rationale
Children love comics (because of the pictures)
Children love superheroes (because they have powers, they are strong,
they help people and provide role models)
Children are interested in power issues (they have experience of the
power of parents, siblings, teachers and imaginary characters)
Children (especially boys) like action figures, codes, passwords,
mazes, maps)
Children like audio and visual presentations (tv, computer, game boy,
movies, latest craze)
Children use aural language as their first form of communication (comic
links the spoken to the written)
Children learn to read through a highly visual fun medium (popular
culture)
